Fit First for February 2019

Fitness First is my monthly fitness update and the first post I publish each month. Although I normally follow a well-established pattern for these posts, I won’t bother for this installment as it has been a very atypical month. I may even need to call this one an “Unfit First.”

I started the year with great intention to get back on track and nail my fitness routing like I had done throughout the middle of 2018. The cold temperatures were a distraction as I deemed it too cold to ride many of the mornings throughout early January. When I did get out to ride on January 8th, I had a great ride and made great time with a solid, better than expected pace. However, when I got off my bike, my back hurt, and as the day progressed it just kept getting worse. It seems I had pushed too hard and would be paying for it for the following 2 weeks.

I gave my back some extra time, but now that it feels back to normal and the weather has taken a turn for the better, I am back on my bike and ready to ease into 10+ mile rides again.

By the Numbers

As I kind of hinted at, I’m not even taking my measurements right now, because I know that they are not an improvement and I am only just getting rolling back into the fitness groove. By March 1st I’ll be recording everything again.

Goals for February and 2019

The categories remain the same, and so does the meat of the goals.

Goal #1 – Cycling. By the end of February, I need to be cycling daily, with a goal of getting back to 20-mile daily rides. I should push to be ready for a 50-miler in early March.

Goal #2 – Weights. A lifting routine has been written with alternating A and B days. My wife and I need to get out to the gym and give it a go so we can see how it works.

Goal #3 – Nutrition. Time for some menu planning. The family received a Ninja Foodi for Christmas which has opened up a lot of new avenues for meal planning. We need to get some good nutritious meals going which include more balance, more vegetables, and less cholesterol (doctor’s orders).

Goal #4 – Goals. I still need to publish a full set of 2019 goals which include quarterly goals and milestones. I do know, however, that I will stick with one goal I have been intending to have all along, and that will be to exceed 5000 road miles for the year.

More updates coming soon! And be sure to let me know if there is anything else specific you want to know about in these posts.
